Bev "Susie" Hooten

Sep 1, 1961 — Sep 30, 2026

Bev “Susie” Hooten, 65, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.

Susie was born on September 1, 1961, in Greensburg, Indiana, the daughter of William and Judith (Mouser) Smith. She graduated from Greensburg Community High School in 1979 and went on to earn a business degree from the Kelley School of Business.

Susie worked as a secretary for several years before joining the cafeteria team at Greensburg Junior High School. She spent more than 14 years there, including serving as the cafeteria manager since 2021.

Susie was a tenderhearted and kind soul who was always there for others. She could be stubborn at times, but that same determination was a part of what made her who she was. She was a giver by nature and loved finding little ways to make people feel special. She enjoyed putting together little gifts, baskets filled with candy, giving flowers, and making small loaves of bread and cookies for family and friends.

Susie was a homebody who enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved playing games on her phone, taking road trips, working on little crafts, and especially playing Bunco with her Bunco buddies. She was a founding member of New Directions and was a member of the Greensburg United Methodist Church, where she was involved in many aspects of the church and enjoyed being part of its community.

Of all the roles Susie held in her life, being a grandmother was the one she cherished most. She loved her grandchildren dearly and had a special way of making everyone feel like they had a grandma in Susie. Her love, generosity, and caring spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

After being diagnosed with cancer, Susie made it clear that she intended to fight. Though her battle was short, she fought hard with the same determination she carried throughout her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Jessica “Jessie” Hooten; grandchildren, Eric Isaacs and Emilia “Pearl” Hooten; sisters, Bonnie Jo (Carl) Veerkamp and Barbara “Toodle” (Mike) Halfacre; along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Judith Smith, and her sister, Betsy Wiley.

A memorial gathering will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Greensburg United Methodist Church. A memorial service will begin at 12:00 p.m., also at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greensburg Animal Shelter or to the donor’s choice.

Susie will be remembered for her tender heart, generous spirit, determination, and the countless little ways she made others feel loved. Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving mother, a cherished grandmother, and a friend who was always there when someone needed her.
