Gary "Sonny" McCartney

Gary “Sonny” E. McCartney, 79, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at The Willows in Greensburg. He was born on September 25, 1946, in Weston, West Virginia, the son of the late Elmer and Alice McCartney.

Sonny proudly served his country in the United States Army. Before moving to Indiana, he worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. After settling in Indiana, he continued his working career with GECOM.

Sonny was a man who enjoyed staying busy and working with his hands. He especially enjoyed carpentry and took pride in building lamps and creating other woodworking projects. His faith was also an important part of his life. He was a member of Lifeline Wesleyan Church, where he enjoyed attending church and giving back to others. Sonny volunteered his time at the church’s food pantry, Hands of Hope, helping provide food and assistance to those in need. He was also a member of American Legion Post #129 in Greensburg.

On September 27, 1975, Sonny married Karon Brown, who preceded him in death on November 14, 2014. He later married Carolyn Downey on August 31, 2020, and she survives.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sons, Gary W. McCartney, Gary E. McCartney II, and Dustin (Lisa) McCartney; stepson, Jerry (Debbie) Downey; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Alice McCartney; his first wife, Karon McCartney; and granddaughter, Desiree McCartney.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Star Cemetery in Decatur County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hands of Hope Food Pantry through the funeral home.
