James Edward “Jim” Luken, 72, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at his home with family by his side. Jim was born on September 19, 1952, in Greensburg, IN to Bertrand and Mary Ann (Eder) Luken.
Jim graduated from Greensburg Community High School in 1970. While at GCHS he met the love of his life, Patty. They were married on May 12, 1973, at St. Mary’s in Greensburg. Together they raised their two boys, Matthew and Brent.
Jim worked as a phone man for several companies locally for 42 years before retiring from Verizon. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of American Legion. He played a pivotal role in the organization of the Sons of American Legion Golf Tournament. The proceeds from that tournament helped to benefit members of the community in need.
For several years, Jim enjoyed bowling in a Wednesday night league with friends and family members. Later in life he traded in the bowling shoes for golf shoes and played in a men’s league and co-ed league where he and his wife, Patty, made a lot of dear friends.
Jim was a laid back, easy-going kind of guy that loved spending time at his home tooling around in the barn or tending to his garden. He also enjoyed making trips to the family’s cabin at Dale Hollow Lake, floating on the water and listening to some good tunes. However, his favorite thing to do was spending time with his grandkids. Whether it was watching them participate in sporting events, choir shows, orchestra concerts, or swimming in the backyard pool, he would always make time to support them in whatever they were doing.
Jim is survived by his two sons Matthew and Brent (Alicia) Luken and four grandchildren: Kyran, Maggie, Jameson, and Emma; three brothers: Michael (Kandee) Luken, Tom (Jan) Luken, Bill Luken; and one sister, Linda (David) Reiger. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister, Nancy McKee.
Family and friends will gather at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to pray the rosary. Visitation will follow until 12:30 P.M., at which the Funeral Mass will take place with Father Carlton Beever officiating. Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greensburg. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
