Mary “Jill” Pratt, 62, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, after a brave fight against neuroendocrine cancer.
She was born on October 4, 1963, the daughter of the late Paul and Sue Marquardt. She attended Thomas More College and received a bachelor’s degree in history. While attending Thomas More, Jill met her future husband, John Pratt, whom she would marry and spend 38 wonderful years with.
Jill was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Of the many things she accomplished in her life, nothing brought her greater pride and joy than being a mom to Clare and Caroline. She had an indomitable spirit and a love for the world around her that she shared with everyone she knew, inspiring her daughters and family every day.
Jill worked at the Greensburg Decatur County Library as the Head Children’s Librarian for over 20 years, where she was dedicated to promoting literacy and fostering a love of reading among the children and families of Decatur County, including through story time and the annual summer reading program. Jill loved books, and she shared that love with her community, family, and friends. Everyone who knew her was better for it.
Jill was also a dedicated Girl Scout leader for both Clare and Caroline for many years, sharing her time and enthusiasm with their troops and creating memories they will always cherish.
Jill was a beloved member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and embodied the very best values of Jesus Christ. She lived these values through compassion, justice, and generosity, with a deep passion for standing up for those who were marginalized or excluded and a belief in the dignity of every person. She passed these values along to her family and friends, particularly her daughters, Clare and Caroline.
Jill is survived by her husband, John Pratt; her daughters, Clare Leeds (Tyler) and Caroline Pratt (George Ryan); her sisters, Kathy Molony (Tim), Kristen Glennon, Joan Ruskin (Steve), and Betsy Popple (Steve); John’s siblings, Mike Pratt (Mary Beth), Tom Pratt, Susie Clark (Kevin), and Jim Pratt (Anna); her nephews, Jon Michael Pratt, Corbin Pratt (Ambar), Jack Clark, Tom Clark, Sam Pratt (Megan), Josh Dorsey (Nicole), Brian Molony (Matt Cullinan), Andrew Ruskin, and Will Ruskin; and her nieces, Karrie Kunkel (Joe), Abbey Pratt, Darby Davis (Nathan), Melissa Brown (David), Stephanie Glennon (Jacob), and Shannon Molony.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Sue Marquardt, and her parents-in-law, Rex and Lucille Pratt.
Her family hopes to carry on Jill’s legacy of kindness, curiosity, open-mindedness, and love, and her commitment to making the world a better place. She will never be forgotten and will always be loved.
A Rosary will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home, followed by visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Jill’s Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to return to St. Mary’s following the burial for a luncheon and time together in Jill’s memory.
In lieu of flowers, Jill’s family asks that donations be made to the Jill Pratt Summer Reading Memorial Fund to help continue a program that meant so much to her. Jill led the library’s summer reading program for many years, encouraging more than 1,000 children from across the county each year to keep reading throughout the summer while bringing special programs and experiences to the community. Some of her favorites included Silly Safaris, visits from authors, and even penguins from the Newport Aquarium. The memorial fund will help fill the funding gap for the summer reading program so that children across Decatur County can continue to enjoy it for years to come.
