Richard Carlton Rust

Richard Carlton Rust, 92, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, at Morning Breeze in Greensburg, Indiana, the same town in which he was born on January 26, 1934.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice, who passed in June 2019. He is survived by his three children, Lee Rust-Gonzelez, Christopher Rust, and Tom Rust, as well as seven grandchildren.

From an early age, Richard distinguished himself through both leadership and character. In high school, he served as class president and was recognized by his peers as Best All-Around Athlete and Most Likely to Succeed—honors that reflected the promise he would go on to fulfill throughout his life.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1956 and St. John’s Seminary a few years later with a master’s degree in philosophy. He spent eight years in the seminary before discerning a different calling. Choosing the path of husband and father, Richard devoted himself fully to his family, a role in which he excelled and took great pride.

Richard spent the majority of his professional life at the family business, Rust Wholesale, Inc., where he served as Vice President of Transportation. He also taught philosophy and logic at IU Columbus at night during the 1980s and 90s. He was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and steady leadership.

A man of deep faith, Richard was devoted to his Catholic beliefs throughout his life. He found joy in philosophy, reading, football, and, most of all, time spent with his family. Those who knew him remember him as an honest, hardworking, and kind man—someone who seemed to have no enemies and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Richard’s life was defined by his quiet strength, his devotion to others, and his unwavering character. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg at 9:00am on Friday, April 10, 2026, followed by Mass at 11:00am. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
